focus: week 1

“The shortest way to do many things is to do only one thing at a time.”

— Sydney Smiles

A thought to begin the first full week of the year.  “Focus” is my word of the year for 2010, and in time these weekly posts may include updates or thoughts about how that word is unfolding its meaning for me.

For now, though, a simple reminder about single-tasking will get me started.  My little sister, whose gloved hands are busy moving the begonias in this picture, seems to have been born with an innate talent to focus on what she’s doing in this moment.  I’ll be emulating her this week.

    • Really? I’ll have to check in on your progress, Susan. That’s so cool!

    • Oh, and happy CEDing 🙂

  2. Focus is a good word. I think I have adult onset of attention deficit disorder. If I get distracted from whatever project I’m doing, next thing I know I’m in the other room doing something else. It will be interesting to mark your progress in this area.Does that happen to you? Or do you get the mind wandering around so you cant devote all attention to your project?

    • You made me smile, gemma. I don’t think it’s attention deficit disorder so much as choosing to begin or investigate way too many projects at a time, and thus frittering away my time, a little here, a little there. It’s not that I never get projects done, of course. It’s just that I suspect this pattern is in place for a reason… that perhaps I routinely distract myself and sabotage my efforts on the bigger dreams for my life, so that I don’t have to deal with things like, oh, fear of failure, ambivalence about attention, etc. It’s not really stuff that a time management course would fix. (Too bad!)
