the beginning of a miracle

“After all these years, I see that I was mistaken about Eve in the beginning; it is better to live outside the Garden with her than inside it without her.”

— Adam, in Adam’s Diary by Mark Twain

“I first learned the concepts of non-violence in my marriage.”

— Mohandas K. Ghandi

“Marriage is not just spiritual communion.  It is also remembering to take out the trash.”

— Joyce Brothers

“My advice to you is to get married.  If you find a good wife, you’ll be happy; if not, you’ll become a philosopher.”

— Socrates

“For two people in a marriage to live together day after day is unquestionably the one miracle the Vatican has overlooked.”

— Bill Cosby

Are y’all sensing where I’m going with this yet?

(Pause for throat clearing, nervous shifting of feet.)

F. and I got married today!

Yep.  We finally did it.  I actually prepped this post a bit in advance, so don’t be worried about me, thinking I’m spending my wedding night in front of the computer.  I’m not really here, I promise.  I just wanted to share the news.

We kind of kept it a secret, and we did it in front of a probate court judge.  I swore I’d never go through a fancy wedding ever again.  Both of us have been married before — and divorced, and we’re both old enough now to know what we’re doing.  (Well, I hope.  It’s been over a decade since I was last married.)  We at least knew to look for someone with similar values, a shared sense of humor, and well-honed communication skills.

We both also know that happily-ever-after is merely a language construct employed because nobody wanted to tell the stories of what happened after the vows had been exchanged.  Probably for good reason.  I’m wondering exactly how charming the prince was before he’d had his coffee the morning he was facing an unpleasant meeting with his thesis adviser.  And I’m just betting Cinderella didn’t attract sweet little birdies to land on her calmly outstretched finger in the hours before her new in-laws visited their home for the first time — especially after the prince made that unfortunate comment about the kitchen floor already looking “clean enough” as she passed by with her formerly lovely hair snarled in a clip atop her head, mop in hand.

So actually what we know is that nobody knows what they’re doing when they get married.

But I’m still so happy we did it.

  1. congratulations! Wishing you many happy years together.

  2. Congratulations!

Every marriage is a great adventure. Good on you for going in with the right attitude. Enjoy every moment; even the rough times have their worth 🙂

  3. Congratulations! My second time has definitely been better. (There were 10 years between my first and second marriages, too.)

  4. oh my goodness! Congratulations!!!

  5. Thank you, everyone, for your kind wishes and congratulations 🙂

  6. congratulations! (what were you doing reading blogs two days after?) thanks for stopping by to visit me in the midst of your new happiness.

i can see from the tags it’s #2, which i’ve done myself and i have to say that it’s so much nicer! the wedding and the marriage and the husband. 🙂

love of happiness to you. now i have to go read some of your other posts…

    • LOL 😉 We didn’t take a honeymoon, and it’s a regular schedule starting this evening, with F. teaching classes and doing research this week, and me with standard deadlines. It’s not that we’re not romantic, just practical. We’re saving for a big trip to Europe in June, instead of a honeymoon 🙂 Or maybe as a postponed honeymoon….

Yes, I think the second time around is better in every way, so far. (Two days experience speaking, hehe.)

      Thanks for the kind wishes!
